About

The Isle of Wight Crematorium is based at Whippingham, East Cowes.  It was opened in 1961 and is the only crematorium on the island.  The Bereavement Services Offices are located here and we are proud to hold Cremation Registers since its opening along with burial records dating back to the 1800s for the Isle of Wight Council's twelve cemeteries.

Our staff pride themselves in respectfully helping people who are faced with bereavement.  We strive to be compassionately supportive, it is a privilege and honour to be part of all processes.  Our services include cremations, burials, scatterings and memorials.

CREMATIONS

In the first year of opening 308 cremations were carried out.  Today, that number has increased to approximately 1,500 per year.

Services run every 45 minutes and we cater for all denominations.  A full service allows for a 25 minute service, shorter committal services are also available as well as unattended direct cremations.  Upon request longer services can be arranged.  Our recently refurbished chapel is fitted with an induction loop, and we are now able to offer online streaming of services as well as visual tributes / slideshows.

BURIALS

The Isle of Wight Council is responsible for maintaining twelve cemeteries on the island.  We can accommodate both full burials and cremated remains burials.

Please contact us by email bereavement.services@iow.gov.uk to further discuss burials or buying a grave.

MEMORIALS

There are numerous options for you to remember your loved ones at the Crematorium and its Gardens of Remembrance.

Permanent entries can be placed in our beautiful Books of Remembrance by application; this is not something that will happen automatically.  These are housed internally and are opened Monday to Saturday throughout the year.

Please contact our Memorials Officer by emailing bereavement.services@iow.gov.uk to discuss other memorial options available.

SCATTERINGS

There are 10 acres of woodland and lawned gardens for visitors seeking a place for quiet contemplation and remembrance.

These Gardens of Remembrance consist of areas set aside for scattering cremated remains.

All scatterings must take place by prior arrangement; please contact us by emailing bereavement.services@iow.gov.uk to arrange an appointment.

Please feel rest assured that all services are carried out within the statutory legislation. We are committed to adhering to the Institute of Cemetery and Crematoria Management policies and guidelines for best practice. The ICCM represents its Corporate members at government level and their aim is to raise standards for the bereaved.

We work very closely with Funeral Directors and families to ensure loved ones wishes are carried out accordingly.
